#56 MORE OF DAD'S COLLECTIONS
DAD'S OTHER COLLECTIONS
LIBRARY
Dad's library reflected his love of transportation. He owned over 1000 railways books which he was proud to donate to the Palmerston Railway museum. He also enjoyed reading/collecting books about military airplanes and ships and cars.

DIE CASTS
There were over 1500 die cast and dinky toys--cars, trucks, planes, construction, buses, tractors-- mounted in cabinets on the basement walls. Any type of transportation vehicle was collectible.
TOY FIRETRUCKS
There were about 1400 toy firetrucks of all sizes and types--new, used, child, tin-- on display in his home; each was catalogued. Mom did put her foot down when Dad considered buying a real firetruck for his back yard. Dad's collection of toy firetrucks was donated to the Harriston Fire Department. On his 90th birthday, he was made an Honourary Member of the town's Fire Department.

MODEL SHIPS
Dad built many model ships from kits. His modellling was museum quality. A few of his model ships were donated to the Grey-Bruce Museum.
Dad's interest in clocks was in refinishing the wooden cases, not in the mechanisms. He was always on the lookout for Canadian clocks. At one time he had over 100 clocks on the walls. He built a grandfather clock from a kit. He only got rid of some of this collection to allow space for his firetruck collection. As well as clocks, he had a collection of pocket and wrist watches. I was happy to find my paternal and maternal grandfathers' and my grandmother's pocket watches in this collection.
WORKSHOP--CARPENTRY
Every serious modeller and woodworker needs a workshop. Dad's was in a double garage. You name it-he had not one, but many, of every power and hand tool imagineable--and he knew exactly in what drawer or on what wall it could be found
Dad collected Canadian stamps, mint Canadian coins. He was a loyal customer of the town's Ford dealership--of the belief that it was preferable to regularly trade a car in than pay for a repair.. Dad was a major buying force of Mom's collections. (and the original boxes for most of the collectibles were stored in the attic!)
And all those boxes did get recycled - took me several years to do it! vs
